Compare the change between late-April/early-May to mid-May of each year.
The cooler, upwelled water next to the coast in early May is covered by
a warmer layer between May 2 and May 16, 1997. Warming extends into the
Alaska Gyre. Upwelling resumes in June-July, producing normal cool upwelling
features (inshore of warmer water in 1997), as seen in July-August. Another
pulse of warm water covers these features in September, 1997. After another
brief period of upwelling in October, warm water returns next to the coast
in November. In December, the normal pattern (1996) is to see cooler water
next to the coast as the whole system cools seasonally. In 1997, the pattern
is reversed, with warmer water next to the coast.
